A lot of men have HPV and never know it. That is what makes this virus so easy to miss. Most of the time, it causes no symptoms at all, and many infections clear on their own within one to two years.

Even so, men can still carry it, pass it on, and sometimes deal with warts or other health problems without realizing HPV is involved.

What Is HPV in Men?

Human papillomavirus is a group of viruses that infect the skin and moist tissues of the body.

In men, it can affect the penis, scrotum, anus, mouth, and throat. Some types of HPV even cause genital warts. Other types are high risk and can raise the risk of HPV related cancer, including anal cancer, penile cancer, and cancers in the back of the throat.

How Common Is HPV in Men?

HPV in men is extremely common among sexually active adults.

  • World Health Organization found that almost 1 in 3 men over age 15 carry at least one genital HPV type, and about 1 in 5 carry at least one high-risk type.

  • Another study from HIM, which looked at men in Brazil, Mexico, and the United States, found overall HPV prevalence 65.2% and 25.7%.

That gives a pretty clear picture of the risk: men can carry and spread genital HPV even when they feel completely fine.

HPV Symptoms in Men

Most men with an HPV infection do not notice any symptoms.

When they show up, it’s usually genital warts. These can look like small bumps, flat spots, raised bumps, or a cauliflower-like cluster on the penis, scrotum, groin, thigh, or around the anus.

Some types of HPV cause those visible warts. High-risk types are usually silent and are more likely to show up later through cell changes or cancer.

Symptoms that men must NOT ignore:

  • New warts or unusual growths: Small flesh-colored bumps, flat spots, or rough cauliflower-like clusters on the genitals or around the anus.

  • Sores or lumps: Open skin, thickened patches, or firm bumps on the penis, scrotum, anus, mouth, or throat.

  • A long-lasting sore throat: Ongoing throat irritation that does not settle after the usual cold or infection window.

  • Hoarseness or voice changes: A rough, weak, or different voice that sticks around.

  • Ear pain or pain when swallowing: Ongoing pain, especially on one side, or a sharp feeling when swallowing.

  • Swollen lymph nodes or a neck lump: A firm or enlarged area in the neck that does not go down.

  • Unexplained weight loss: Weight dropping without trying, especially along with throat or swallowing problems.

How Do Men Get HPV?

Men usually get HPV through vaginal or anal sex, oral sex, or close genital-to-genital contact.

The virus spreads from infected skin or moist tissue on areas like the penis, scrotum, anus, mouth, or throat, so penetration is not required, and neither is ejaculation.

That is why HPV can spread so easily. A partner can have no warts, no sores, no obvious symptoms, and still pass the virus on through normal sexual contact.

What Should Men Do If They Think They Have HPV?

Most HPV infections in men do not turn into a serious health problem.

Still, anything new or unusual on the penis, scrotum, anus, mouth, or throat deserves a medical review. That includes warts, lumps, sores, and throat symptoms that linger.

Men who smoke should take this especially seriously, because smoking raises the risk that HPV will stick around and do more damage over time.

This is also a good time to clean up the basics: sleep better, eat better, and talk through next steps with a clinician.

Can Men Be Tested for HPV?

Usually, not in the same way women are. There is no routine HPV test or HPV DNA test approved for men like cervical screening in women.

Most of the time, HPV in men is found because there is something visible to examine, such as genital warts, a sore, a lump, or another suspicious area.

In some higher-risk situations, a specialist may look more closely at the anus, penis, mouth, or throat, depending on the symptoms and sexual history.

An anal Pap test may also come up for certain men at higher risk, but it is not standard screening for every male.

Can HPV in Men Be Prevented?

The first best prevention is the HPV vaccine. It protects against the HPV types that cause most genital warts and many HPV-related cancers in men, including anal, penile, and oropharyngeal cancers.

It works best before someone is exposed to the virus, which is why it is recommended early, but it can still work later, depending on age and risk.

Condoms, of course, can lower the chance of picking up or passing genital HPV infection, but they do not cover all genital skin, so they cannot fully block skin-to-skin spread.
